Infrared Repairs

Infrared Repair method recycles the existing asphalt and ensures a thermal bond between the existing asphalt and the repair work area that provides a less permeable joint that outperforms traditional repair methods.

Infrared Repair Process

  • Identify and Mark Areas to be Heated

  • Sweep Area clean of Any Dirt or Dust

  • Place Heaters Over Repair Area, Use Only the Correct Number of Heaters to Cover the Repair Area, Turn All Other Heaters Off

  • Heat Repair Area For 5-7 Minutes with Heaters on High, then 5-7 Minutes with Heaters on Low (Make Sure Surface Temp Never Exceeds 190c). 

  • Soften Asphalt to 50mm (2 - 2.5") Depth

  • When Asphalt is Workable to Entire Thickness of Asphalt, Move Heater Away from Repair Area

  • Using Rake, Define the Edges of the Repair Making a clean Straight Line, Allowing 2"- 3" of Heated Area Untouched to Allow for Seamless Transition Between Old and  New Asphalt. 

  • Rework Entire Repair Area Using Rake to Eliminate any Imperfections. The First Sections To Be Reworked Should Be the Edges of the Patched Areas, All Edges Should be Straight and Square to Create Uniform Looking Patches.

Infrared Process - Con't

  • Once Entire Area Has Been Reworked, the Asphalt Rejuvenation Agent Should Be Sprayed the Entire Patched Area. The Additive Should Then Be Thoroughly Mixed Into the Repair Areas Using an Asphalt Rake or Lute, at the Same Time the Heated Asphalt Should be Leveled then Sprayed Once More Using the Same Rates. This Will Ensure Adequate Coverage. It is Important to Spray the Edges of the Repair, This Includes Both the Edge of the Joint and the Surface of the Heated Area. 

  • Fresh Hot Mix Asphalt Should be Added as Required to the Repair Area to Fill and Level all Depressions. An Asphalt Lute Should be Used to Level and Spread the Hot Mix. Extra Effort Needs to be Made to Ensure Adequate Asphalt is at the Edge of the Repair. 

  • While the Material is Still Hot, Compact the Edges of the Patch First Ensuring that there is a Seamless Edge Between the Old and the New Asphalt. Once the Initial Pass from the Roller is Complete, Visually Look At the Patch to Ensure There Are No Segregation Areas That Need To Be Filled With Hot Mix.

  • As An Extra Step, Spray Rejuvenator Across the Entire Patch.

  • The Newly Patched Area Should be protected From Traffic For a Minimum of 2 Hours or Until the Asphalt Has Cooled Sufficiently That Use Will Not Have Any Marks. If Imperative, Traffic Can Go On Repair Immediately After. 

Infrared Repair Products

  1. Infrared Heater - Equipment heats and softens the asphalt allowing it to be worked in order to eliminate cracks and imperfections.

  2. Asphalt Hot Box or Asphalt Recycler - Provides fresh hot mix asphalt (HMA) that is used to fill imperfections / cracks once asphalt has been worked. 

  3. Rejuvenator - Product is sprayed onto the worked asphalt which assists in recoating the existing aggregate with supplemental asphalt cement and helps further bond the perimeter of the work area to the adjacent, unworked asphalt.

  4. Compactor - A vibratory roller or plate tamper is used to compact the repaired area after rejuvenator & fresh HMA have been added. 

  5. Misc. Tools - Ice Scraper / Rake is used to scarify the heated asphalt in the work area. An Asphalt Lute is used to mix in fresh HMA and smooth work area. A Sprayer is required to add rejuvenator to the work area. Broom / Blower are used to clean the repair area before heat is applied.
